Are home batteries safe? Yes — if. And the "if" is the whole story.
The rebate boom is putting batteries into hundreds of thousands of Australian homes, so it's a fair question. The honest answer: a modern LFP battery, installed to AS/NZS 5139 by an accredited installer, is a low-risk appliance — but the risk isn't zero, and the incidents that do happen cluster around recalled units left running and corners cut on cheap installs. Here's the recall check, the chemistry question, the places a battery must never go, and the red flags that should stop a purchase — including on our quotes.

Are home batteries
actually safe?
For the overwhelming majority of homes, yes — a CEC-approved LFP battery, installed to the standard by an accredited installer, is a low-risk appliance. But "low risk" is not "no risk", and the risk that remains is mostly chosen: recalled units left running, grey imports, and installs that cut corners.
Here's the honest frame. Home battery fires in Australia are rare — we won't invent a scary number, because the credible sources don't support one. But lithium batteries store a lot of energy, and the safety record isn't an accident: it's the product of a strict installation standard (AS/NZS 5139:2019), an approved-product regime run by the Clean Energy Council, installer accreditation through Solar Accreditation Australia, and an active recall system at the ACCC. Stay inside that system and the residual risk is genuinely small. Step outside it — a non-approved import, an unaccredited install, a recalled unit nobody checked — and you've opted into most of the risk that exists.
So this guide isn't "should you be scared" (you shouldn't be). It's the five checks that keep you inside the system: the recall list, the chemistry question, the location rules, the compliant-install tell-tales, and the red flags. They apply to every quote — including ours. The single highest-value safety action for any battery owner is free and takes five minutes: search your battery's brand and model on the ACCC's recall register at productsafety.gov.au.
The one every Australian battery owner should know about is the long-running LG Energy Solution recall. Certain LG home batteries can overheat and catch fire, and the recall covers more than the LG badge: affected LG cells were also installed inside other brands' systems, including LG RESU models and the SolaX Power Station and X-Cabinet, Opal Storage, Redback SH5000, Red Earth Sunrise and Drop Bear, Eguana Evolve and VARTA Pulse Neo (source: ACCC Product Safety).
Key facts, as at mid-2026:
- The recall is still open. It began in 2021 and years later a substantial number of affected batteries had still not been located. If your battery was installed roughly between 2017 and 2019 and any of those names appear on it, check.
- The remedy is free. Replacement or refund, plus compensation for higher bills while the unit is switched off. In November 2025 the ACCC accepted a strengthened undertaking from LG giving affected owners expedited access to replacement or refund (source: ACCC).
- If yours is affected: switch it off and call. LG on 1300 677 273, or SolaX on 1300 476 529 for SolaX-badged systems. Don't leave a known-recalled battery running — that is precisely the "chosen risk" this guide is about.
And recalls aren't a one-brand, old-stock story. In November 2025, Sigenergy — one of the top-selling battery brands in the country, and one we install — recalled certain SigenStor single-phase energy controllers because a quick-connect AC plug could overheat; the fix is a free replacement controller (source: ACCC Product Safety). The lesson isn't "avoid brand X". It's that the recall system works when owners actually check it — so bookmark productsafety.gov.au and search any battery you own or are quoted.
One question to ask:
"What chemistry is it?"
Not all lithium batteries are the same. The chemistry inside the box changes how a cell behaves when things go wrong — and it's a question any competent retailer should answer instantly.
Most home batteries are lithium-ion, but the cathode chemistry differs — and it matters for safety. The two you'll hear about are LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and NMC (nickel manganese cobalt). As a matter of battery chemistry, the LFP cathode is more thermally stable: it withstands considerably higher temperatures before thermal runaway — the self-accelerating overheating that causes battery fires — begins, and when it does break down it releases far less oxygen, so a failing LFP cell is less prone to feeding its own fire and cascading into neighbouring cells (see e.g. this peer-reviewed comparison of LFP and NMC technologies).
Three honest qualifications:
- LFP is not fireproof. It's a meaningful, well-documented safety margin — not an exemption from the installation standard. A badly installed LFP battery is still a badly installed battery.
- NMC is not a scandal. Plenty of NMC systems have run safely for years. The recalled LG units were NMC-era products with a specific cell defect — the recall is about those units, not an indictment of everyone's NMC.
- The market has largely voted. Most of the popular home batteries now sold in Australia have moved to LFP — one reason we predominantly quote LFP systems. Compare current models in our honest best-battery rundown.
The practical takeaway: ask your retailer "what chemistry is this battery, and is it on the CEC approved product list?" A good one answers immediately and specifically. A vague answer is data.
Where a battery must
never be installed.
AS/NZS 5139:2019 — the Australian battery installation standard — is blunt about locations. If a quote proposes any of these spots, the quote is the problem.
The standard restricts where a home battery may be installed, and the restricted list is worth knowing before anyone sketches your install (sources: GSES; Building Commission NSW):
- Not in habitable rooms. Bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens — anywhere people live and sleep is off-limits for the battery unit.
- Not in ceiling spaces or wall cavities. Concealed spaces where a fault can't be seen or reached are out.
- Not under stairways or access walkways, and not blocking an exit or evacuation route.
- Clearances apply. Broadly, 600 mm-scale clearances from windows and vents that open into habitable rooms, from narrow exits, and from other appliances such as hot water units and air conditioners.
- Barriers on shared walls. If the battery hangs on a combustible wall that backs onto a habitable room, a non-combustible barrier must be fitted, extending around and above the unit.
Note the standard moved recently: Amendment 1 to AS/NZS 5139:2019 was published on 19 December 2025 and is now mandatory, adjusting several clearance and barrier details — for example, how openings wider than 900 mm (like garage doors) are treated, and minimum barrier material thickness (source: Building Commission NSW). You don't need to memorise clause numbers — your installer does. It's entirely fair to ask "which clause covers this location?" and expect a straight answer. In practice, a garage wall or a shaded external wall with clear space around it is the typical compliant answer; a bedroom wall or the cupboard under the stairs is a proposal to walk away from.

You don't need to be an electrician to spot a good install. These are the visible tell-tales — and under the federal battery rebate, most of them are eligibility conditions, not nice-to-haves.
CEC-approved battery
The battery and inverter are on the Clean Energy Council approved product list — a requirement of the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program and most network connections (source: DCCEEW). Ask for the exact model and look it up.
SAA-accredited installer
The install is carried out, or supervised on site, by a battery installer accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia — again, a condition of the federal rebate (source: Clean Energy Regulator). Ask for the accreditation number before you pay a deposit, and verify it yourself.
Signage, isolator, paperwork
A clearly labelled isolator, required warning signage at the unit and switchboard, compliant location and clearances, any required fire barrier — and at the end, your state's electrical compliance certificate plus commissioning documents. No paperwork, no handover.

Batteries don't become dangerous by magic. The risk concentrates where the system is bypassed. These are the flags that should stop a purchase — or prompt a fix at home this weekend.
Clutter against the unit
A battery installed correctly can still be compromised afterwards. Boxes, fuel cans, mower bags and general garage clutter stacked against the unit undermine the clearances the standard exists to protect. Keep the space around your battery clear — it's the one safety job that's entirely yours, and it costs nothing.
Non-approved imports
A battery that isn't on the CEC approved list hasn't been assessed against the requirements Australian rebate programs and networks rely on — and it will generally cost you the federal rebate and can raise hard questions with your insurer. DIY second-life packs
Salvaged EV modules or loose cells wired together in a shed are the highest-risk configuration in home storage: cells of unknown history, no engineered enclosure, no standard, no accreditation. We'll say it plainly — don't. A home battery is not a hobbyist project, and no saving justifies it.
So — should safety worry
stop you buying a battery?
No. It should change how you buy one. Here's the call we'd give a friend.
If you already own a battery: spend five minutes on productsafety.gov.au tonight — especially if it went in between 2017 and 2019 or carries any of the names in the LG recall — and clear the clutter around the unit this weekend. If you're shopping: insist on a CEC-approved battery (ask the chemistry — most good options are LFP now), an SAA-accredited installer whose number you've verified before paying a deposit, a compliant location you've discussed on site, and compliance paperwork at handover. Those checks also protect the thing that outlasts install day: your warranty, which non-compliant installs routinely void. What we'd urge against is both extremes — buying in fear of a rare event, and "saving" thousands with a grey import or an unaccredited mate. The Australian system of standards, approved products and accreditation is genuinely good. Stay inside it, and a home battery is one of the safer large appliances you'll own.

AS/NZS 5139:2019, Australia's battery installation standard, restricts where a battery may go. Batteries must not be installed in habitable rooms — bedrooms, living areas and the like — nor in ceiling spaces, wall cavities, under stairways or access walkways, or where they would block an exit or evacuation route. Clearance rules apply around the unit, including from windows and vents that open into habitable rooms and from other heat-producing appliances such as hot water units and air conditioners. Where a battery hangs on a combustible wall that backs onto a habitable room, a non-combustible barrier must be fitted and extended around the unit. The standard was amended in December 2025, so some details have shifted — your installer should design to the current version, and it is fair to ask them to point to the clause. It is a completely fair question to put to any retailer: 'What chemistry is this battery, and is it on the CEC approved product list?' A good retailer answers immediately and specifically — and if the answer is vague, that tells you something too.
A compliant install has visible tell-tales. The battery is a model on the Clean Energy Council approved product list, mounted in a compliant location — typically a garage or external wall away from openings — with the clearances of AS/NZS 5139:2019 respected and any required non-combustible barrier fitted. There is a clearly labelled isolator and the required warning signage at the unit and the switchboard. The area around the battery stays clear — no boxes, fuel cans or clutter stacked against it. The work is carried out or supervised on site by a battery installer accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia, and you receive the electrical compliance certificate for your state plus commissioning paperwork. If your battery was installed under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, most of this is not optional: an approved battery and accredited installation are conditions of the rebate itself.
We will be blunt: don't. A battery that is not on the CEC approved product list has not been assessed against the requirements Australian rebate programs and networks rely on, will generally make you ineligible for the federal battery rebate, and can raise hard questions with your insurer. Riskier again are DIY packs built from second-life cells — salvaged EV modules or loose cells wired together in a shed. Lithium cells of unknown history and state of health are exactly the ones with elevated failure risk, and a home battery is not a hobbyist project. If a quote is only cheap because the battery is a grey import, or the installer is not SAA-accredited, the discount is the hazard. Battery fires are rare in Australia — and the way to keep yours in the 'rare' column is an approved product, a compliant location and an accredited installer.
