We agree the exact circuits before install

Most batteries don’t power your whole home in an outage by default — and even when they do, they protect chosen circuits, not the entire house at once. Before install we sit down and agree exactly what stays on: the fridge, the modem, key lights, essential devices. No vague ‘blackout protection’ you only get to test the hard way.

A home battery is a convenience backup, not a certified life-support supply — if a device is life-critical we’ll say so plainly and help you plan a dedicated, independent backup for it.

Some batteries we install — like Tesla with Storm Watch, plus similar features on other brands — track official severe-weather alerts and automatically charge to full before a forecast event, so you enter the outage with maximum reserve. Sometimes a battery isn’t the answer

For a remote property facing days-long outages and heavy loads, the honest answer might be an off-grid design with generator input — not a single home battery. We’d rather scope the right resilience solution, or point you to someone who can, than sell you a backup that won’t hold up the day you actually need it.

Australia’s regulator inspects a risk-targeted sample of new battery installs, and its latest report flagged the majority as sub-standard on at least one point — most often paperwork or signage, a much smaller share genuinely unsafe. We install to the AS/NZS 5139 safety standard and will walk you through the exact placement, separation and signage checklist we work to. Ask to see it.

The calmer chemistry

LFP: a fundamentally more stable cell

Almost every battery we fit is LFP (lithium iron phosphate) — far more resistant to thermal runaway than the NMC/NCA cells behind most home lithium fires (think e-bikes and e-scooters, not home batteries). Australia has seen only a handful of confirmed home-battery fires against 250,000+ installed systems. No battery is risk-free — which is why we also install to the Australian standard — but if lithium safety is what worries you, LFP is the honest reason to worry a lot less.

Home-battery installs are governed by a specific Australian safety standard, AS/NZS 5139:2019 — where the unit goes, clearances, ventilation and warning signage. Our SAA-accredited installers wire to it on every job. It’s a named standard you can look up, not a promise you have to take on faith.

Warranty reality

A 10-year warranty is only as good as the company left to honour it

An estimated 600,000 Australian solar systems are now ‘orphaned’ — roughly 1 in 6-7 solar homes, where the original installer has stopped trading. The maker’s product warranty usually survives that — but only if the maker still trades here — while the installer’s workmanship cover and after-sales help vanish with them. We’ll tell you which brands have a real Australian importer standing behind them, and we intend to be here when you need us.

Modern home batteries last a long time in Australian conditions. Lithium batteries like the Tesla Powerwall and BYD are rated for 10,000+ cycles, which translates to roughly 10-15 years of daily charging and discharging. Because most Australian households cycle their battery once a day — charging on cheap solar or off-peak power and discharging through the evening peak — that cycle rating maps closely to calendar years of real-world use. Most batteries come with a 10-year manufacturer warranty guaranteeing at least 70% capacity retention, meaning the manufacturer expects the pack to still hold at least seventy per cent of its original storage after a decade rather than failing outright. Battery lifespan is affected by climate, how deeply you discharge it and whether it is installed in a cool, shaded, well-ventilated spot, so correct installation and siting matter for getting the full service life.
Yes — a home battery can power your home during a blackout, but only when it is set up for backup. When your battery is paired with a hybrid inverter and a backup circuit, it detects the outage and keeps supplying your home from stored energy, and the switchover happens in milliseconds, so sensitive devices and lights usually stay on without you noticing the grid went down. It is worth knowing that not every solar battery is wired for backup by default, and many are configured to feed the house and grid but shut off in an outage for electrical safety reasons. How much you can run, and for how long, depends on your battery's stored capacity and which circuits are placed on the protected backup supply — commonly essentials like lighting, the fridge and power points rather than the whole home. We confirm your backup needs before installation.
Yes, you can add a battery to an existing solar system, and retrofitting a battery to solar panels that are already on the roof is one of our most common installations across Australia. There are two main paths. If your current setup uses a standard solar (string) inverter, we can add an AC-coupled battery with its own inverter-charger alongside it, so your panels keep running untouched. Alternatively, we can replace your existing inverter with a hybrid inverter that manages both solar and storage in one unit, which can be tidier and enables blackout backup. The right choice depends on the age, size and brand of your current inverter, your switchboard, your energy use pattern and your budget. We assess your current inverter and system, then recommend the most cost-effective battery integration for your home, including whether any rebates or interest-free finance apply to your situation.
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of home batteries that a provider coordinates to act like one large power station. By opting in, you let the operator briefly draw on your stored energy and export it to the grid during peak demand, and in return you earn credits or payments for sharing that energy. It is a way to make an idle battery earn its keep between the times you need it yourself. Programs like Tesla Energy Plan or AGL's VPP can offset your battery costs by an indicative $400-$800 per year, though actual earnings depend on your state, retailer, VPP program, eligibility and how often your battery is dispatched. Figures are illustrative only and vary — current as at June 2026. Joining a VPP is optional, you keep priority use of your own stored energy, and you can usually set limits on how much the operator may draw.
