Here’s what most sellers skip: keep even one gas appliance and you still pay the full fixed gas supply charge — roughly $255–$365 a year in Victoria — before you’ve burned a single unit. We quote the cold-morning efficiency, not the brochure’s

A heat pump’s efficiency drops as the air gets colder. That headline ‘COP 5’ is a warm-day lab number — on a frosty morning it’s closer to 2 to 2.5, while an old electric element is stuck at 1. So we size for YOUR climate zone: in cold-winter postcodes we spec a cold-climate, Zone-5-rated unit that runs on the heat pump alone down to around −5°C, not the cheapest box that leans on a resistive booster all winter.

Some competitors advertise ‘free’ or ‘$33’ heat pumps — which can’t be compliant, because Victorian Energy Upgrades sets a mandatory $200 minimum customer contribution. No heat pump is genuinely free. What going fully electric can net you

Independent modelling puts net all-electric household savings at roughly $375–$1,790 a year (Victorian Government) or about $1,033–$1,845 a year (Climateworks Centre). The honest part: your electricity spend rises a little as gas spend disappears, and the saving only fully lands once you disconnect gas completely — keep one gas appliance and you’re leaving money on the table.

Hot water that doesn’t flinch in a frost

The question cold-climate homeowners actually ask is ‘will a heat pump still give me hot water at 2°C?’ The honest answer: a properly cold-climate-rated unit keeps running on the heat pump alone through a frost, down to around −5°C. A cheap unit quietly leans on a built-in electric booster on cold mornings — and that’s where a hidden winter bill creeps in. So the comfort is only as good as the unit we spec for your postcode.

Charge at home on off-peak power or your own daytime solar and running costs sit around 2–4 c/km — versus roughly 12–15 c/km for petrol. 7kW single-phase = full overnight

Right-sized, not over-sold

Most Australian homes are single-phase, and a 7kW single-phase charger adds around 40 to 45 km of range an hour: plug in after dinner and almost any EV is full by morning — no three-phase upgrade needed for the majority. Adding the charger during your solar install avoids a second call-out — but unless your kilometres or switchboard justify it, we’ll tell you to wait.

Here’s the real timeline, not the scare version: from 1 March 2027, when an existing Victorian home’s gas hot water reaches end of life, it must be replaced with efficient electric (new homes go all-electric from 1 January 2027; existing gas cooktops are exempt; a working gas heater isn’t forced out; rentals have stricter rules). You’re not being forced to rip out a working system tomorrow — but the day your gas hot water dies, the choice is already made for you. Better to plan the switch on a sunny afternoon than scramble on a cold morning with no hot water.

Rebate rules move faster than most websites update. Victoria’s income cap for its solar rebate changed on 1 July 2026, the federal battery incentive stepped down in May 2026 (next cut 1 January 2027), and several state schemes other sites still advertise have actually closed. We don’t quote you last year’s rebate — we check what you’re genuinely eligible for against the current rules for your address and income, and tell you plainly if a scheme you were counting on has ended.

The install-day costs we never hide

Adding an EV charger, induction cooktop or heat pump sometimes needs switchboard work to add capacity — and sometimes doesn’t. We won’t quote a suspiciously round flat fee or spring a bill on the day: we inspect first, then give you the real scope, typically around $800 to $2,500-plus if capacity is needed, or nothing at all. And a real all-electric conversion legally needs a licensed electrician (in NSW, a compliance certificate lodged for the wiring; in Victoria, an A-class licence) — if a quote looks cheaper because it’s missing that, it’s a red flag, not a bargain.

Installing an EV charger is often worth doing now, even if you don't own an electric vehicle yet, because adding it while our team is already on site for your solar installation is significantly cheaper than arranging a separate standalone install later. During a combined visit the cabling, switchboard work and mounting can be handled in one go, avoiding a second call-out, extra travel and duplicated labour. With electric vehicle adoption growing rapidly across Australia and more affordable models arriving each year, wiring your home ahead of time is a practical way to future-proof the property. A ready-to-use charger can also add appeal if you sell. Whether it suits you depends on your driving needs, off-street parking, switchboard capacity and budget, so we're happy to talk through whether pre-installing now or waiting makes more sense for your particular home and plans.
Solar can cover a large share of everyday EV charging, and in many cases most of it. A typical 6.6kW rooftop solar system produces enough surplus energy across a sunny Australian day to add roughly 40-60km of driving range to an electric vehicle, which comfortably suits average commuting for a lot of households. The key is timing: charging while the sun is up lets your car soak up solar you'd otherwise export, rather than drawing paid power from the grid. Because most cars sit parked during daylight hours, daytime charging at home is often practical. Pairing solar with a home battery goes a step further, letting you store daytime generation and charge the EV overnight from your own stored solar instead of grid electricity. How much your solar realistically covers depends on your system size, driving distance, weather and when you plug in, so results vary by household.
