No, a properly installed solar system should not damage your roof. Mission Green uses SAA-accredited installers who fit engineered mounting systems with weatherproof flashings, so every roof penetration is sealed against water rather than left exposed. On tile, tin and Colorbond roofs common across Australian homes, the mounting feet are anchored to the rafters or battens and the flashings shed rain the way the original roofing does, which can actually add a layer of protection over the fixing points. Before work begins, the roof structure and condition are assessed to confirm it can safely carry the panels and withstand local wind loads. Because the panels are elevated on rails, air still moves underneath and water still drains freely. Every installation also includes a workmanship warranty covering any roof-related issues, so if a leak or fault traces back to the install, it is put right.
Solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy days, just at a reduced level — typically around 10-30% of their peak output depending on how heavy the cloud is, because they respond to daylight rather than direct sun alone. Panels convert the diffuse light that passes through cloud cover, so an overcast Melbourne winter day still puts power into your home, even if it is well below what the same system produces under clear skies. This is why a solar system is sized around your annual generation and household usage, not around a single perfect sunny day. Over a full year the bright days, the mild days and the grey days average out, and a well-designed system accounts for that mix from the start. When Mission Green prepares your savings projections, they are built on realistic annual output that already factors in Melbourne's variable weather and seasons, rather than assuming every day is at full sun.
The physical solar installation itself is quick: most residential systems are completed in a single day, with the crew mounting the panels, fitting the inverter and wiring everything on site before packing up. The longer part of the process is the paperwork around it. From your initial assessment through to switching the system on, the typical end-to-end timeline is 2-4 weeks, because that window includes design sign-off, any required permits and the grid connection application with your local network distributor. In Australia your system must be approved to connect and export to the grid before it can be commissioned, and that approval sits with the network, not the installer. Mission Green manages this documentation for you, so you are not chasing forms yourself. Once connection approval comes through and the meter is configured, your system is switched on and starts generating from that day.
Feed-in tariffs are the credit your retailer pays for surplus solar you export to the grid, and while these tariffs have decreased over time, they are no longer where most of solar's value sits. The bigger saving comes from self-consumption — using your own solar during the day so you avoid buying expensive grid electricity in the first place. Every kilowatt-hour you generate and use yourself is one you do not have to purchase, and with grid electricity prices having risen significantly in recent years, that avoided cost is now typically worth far more than the export credit. This is why systems are best sized around your household's daytime usage, and why shifting loads like the dishwasher, washing machine or pool pump into sunny hours pays off. A battery can push self-consumption further by storing daytime solar for use in the evening.
