Here's the line, and what you genuinely can do instead.

Can you install
an EV charger yourself?
No. Not in any Australian state or territory, unless you personally hold an electrical licence.
This is one of the few questions in home energy with a genuinely black-and-white answer. Installing an EV charger is licensed electrical work in Australia. It involves a new fixed circuit from your switchboard, and fixed wiring work may only be carried out by a licensed electrician — in every state and territory, with no homeowner exemption.
The work must comply with AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules, and on completion your electrician must issue the relevant electrical safety certificate for your state. That certificate is not paperwork for its own sake — it is the document that proves the work was done lawfully, and you will want it later.
We're being blunt because the consequences here are not theoretical, and because “can I install it myself” is usually asked by someone competent and sensible who is trying to save $1,500. It is a reasonable instinct and it is the wrong call, for reasons that have less to do with the fine than with what happens afterwards.

Your home insurance
This is the one that hurts. Unlicensed electrical work can void your home and contents policy — not just for a claim caused by the charger, but potentially for the whole policy, because you have altered the property with non-compliant work. If a fire starts anywhere and the assessor finds unlicensed wiring, you have a problem far larger than a charger.
Warranties, both of them
Charger manufacturers almost universally require installation by a licensed electrician as a warranty condition. So does your vehicle manufacturer for anything charging-related. A DIY install can void the wallbox warranty and give a car maker grounds to decline a claim on charging hardware.
Prosecution, not just a fine
Unlicensed electrical work is an offence under each state's electrical safety legislation. Penalties are substantial, and in serious cases — particularly where someone is injured — consequences extend beyond fines to prosecution. This is regulated the way it is because people die in electrical fires.
The fourth consequence is the quiet one: selling the house. Unlicensed work with no certificate can surface during a sale or a building inspection, and the fix is not always as simple as getting an electrician to sign it off after the fact — a sparky who did not do the work often cannot certify it, which can mean tearing it out and doing it again properly.
Set against saving perhaps $800–$1,500 of labour on a job that carries a certificate, none of that is a reasonable trade.

An EV charger is an unusual electrical load, and that is exactly the point.
The instinct that this is like fitting a light fitting or plugging in an oven is understandable and wrong, for a specific technical reason: an EV charger is one of the largest continuous loads a home will ever have.
Most domestic circuits carry intermittent loads — a kettle for three minutes, an oven cycling on and off, a heat pump modulating. A 7 kW charger draws close to its full rating continuously, for six to ten hours, most nights, for years. That duty cycle is what drives the requirements:
- A dedicated circuit correctly sized for continuous duty, not shared with anything else.
- Correct RCD protection of the right type — EV charging can produce DC residual current that some standard RCDs will not detect, which is a genuine safety consideration rather than a technicality.
- A load assessment against everything else in the house. Add a 7 kW charger to a home that already has ducted air conditioning, an induction cooktop and heat pump hot water and you can exceed what your supply is rated to deliver.
- Network notification where your distributor requires it above a given rating, sometimes with load-management conditions attached.
None of those are things a competent DIYer can reasonably self-assess, and getting any of them wrong produces a fault that does not show up on day one. It shows up on a hot night in year three.
What you
*can* legally do.
The line is clearer than people think.
You can plug in the portable cable that came with the car. Using the manufacturer-supplied emergency charging lead in an existing, properly rated power point is not electrical work — it is using an appliance. Two real cautions: never run it through a domestic extension lead or a piggyback adaptor, and if the power point is old, shared, or on a circuit you are unsure about, have an electrician check it. That cable draws near the continuous limit of a standard outlet for hours at a time, which is precisely the condition that finds a tired connection.
You can choose your own charger. Buying the hardware yourself and having a licensed electrician install it is completely legitimate and sometimes cheaper. Just confirm before you buy that your installer is happy to fit that model and that supplying it yourself does not affect the warranty terms.
You can do the preparation. Clearing access to the switchboard, agreeing the mounting position, sorting strata or landlord permission, checking your tariff and arranging network paperwork are all yours to do and all of them save time and money.
You cannot run the cable, install the isolator, connect anything at the switchboard, or fit the charger itself. That is the licensed part, and it is the part with the certificate attached.
So — what should you
actually do?
Short version.
Hire a licensed electrician, get the certificate, keep it with your house papers. If the cost is the real obstacle, the honest alternative is not a DIY install — it is to keep using the portable cable in an existing power point for now, on a scheduled off-peak or solar window, and fit the wallbox later. That is slower, entirely legal, and costs nothing. For many households with modest daily driving it is genuinely sufficient.
If you're an electrician yourself, then obviously none of this applies to you — though the network notification and load assessment steps still do.

Ask for the licence number before the work starts rather than after, and verify it yourself rather than accepting a photograph of a card. When the job is complete, make sure you receive the electrical safety certificate for your state — this is the document proving the work was performed lawfully, and you will want it for insurance purposes and when you eventually sell the property. Keep it with your house papers alongside your solar and battery documentation. If an installer is reluctant to provide a licence number, vague about which certificate you will receive, or wants payment in full before any documentation is issued, treat that as the answer to a different question and get another quote.
