Can you install an EV charger yourself? No — and the fine is the least of your problems.

This is one of the few questions in home energy with a genuinely black-and-white answer. Fixed EV charger installation is licensed electrical work in every Australian state and territory, with no homeowner exemption. But the reason to take it seriously isn't the penalty — it's that unlicensed work can void your home and contents insurance, the charger's warranty and potentially the car's, and cause real trouble when you sell. Here's the line, and what you genuinely can do instead.

Consequence 1

Your home insurance

This is the one that hurts. Unlicensed electrical work can void your home and contents policy — not just for a claim caused by the charger, but potentially for the whole policy, because you have altered the property with non-compliant work. If a fire starts anywhere and the assessor finds unlicensed wiring, you have a problem far larger than a charger.

Consequence 2

Warranties, both of them

Charger manufacturers almost universally require installation by a licensed electrician as a warranty condition. So does your vehicle manufacturer for anything charging-related. A DIY install can void the wallbox warranty and give a car maker grounds to decline a claim on charging hardware.

Consequence 3

Prosecution, not just a fine

Unlicensed electrical work is an offence under each state's electrical safety legislation. Penalties are substantial, and in serious cases — particularly where someone is injured — consequences extend beyond fines to prosecution. This is regulated the way it is because people die in electrical fires.

Verify the licence, don't assume it. Every state and territory publishes a public register of licensed electrical workers — searchable by name or licence number, free, in about a minute. Ask for the licence number, check it, and make sure you receive the safety certificate when the job is done. Anyone reluctant to give you a licence number has answered a different question. No. Installing a fixed EV charger is licensed electrical work in every Australian state and territory, and there is no homeowner exemption. The work involves a new dedicated circuit from your switchboard, must comply with AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules), and requires a licensed electrician who issues the relevant electrical safety certificate on completion. Doing it yourself is an offence under state electrical safety legislation, with substantial penalties and, in serious cases, prosecution. Beyond the legal position, unlicensed work can void your home and contents insurance, void the charger manufacturer's warranty (almost all require licensed installation as a condition), give a vehicle manufacturer grounds to decline charging-related claims, and create problems when you sell the house, since an electrician who did not perform the work often cannot certify it afterwards.

Yes — using the manufacturer-supplied portable emergency charging cable in an existing, properly rated power point is not electrical work, it is using an appliance, and it is entirely legal. It is also slow: typically around 2 to 2.4 kW, or roughly 10 to 15 km of range per hour, so an overnight charge might add 100 to 150 km. For a plug-in hybrid or a household with modest daily driving that can genuinely be enough, and it is the honest alternative if installation cost is the obstacle. Two important cautions. Never run it through a domestic extension lead or a piggyback adaptor. And if the power point is old, shared with other loads, or on a circuit you are unsure about, have an electrician check it, because that cable draws near the continuous limit of a standard outlet for many hours at a time, which is exactly the condition that finds a tired connection or a loose terminal.

Because a fixed EV charger is a new circuit, not a plug-in appliance, and because it is one of the largest continuous loads a home will ever carry. Most domestic circuits handle intermittent demand — a kettle for three minutes, an oven cycling on and off. A 7 kW charger draws close to its full rating continuously for six to ten hours, most nights, for years. That duty cycle drives four requirements a homeowner cannot reasonably self-assess: a dedicated circuit sized for continuous duty; RCD protection of the correct type, since EV charging can produce DC residual current that some standard RCDs will not detect; a whole-of-house load assessment, because adding 7 kW to a home with ducted air conditioning, an induction cooktop and heat pump hot water can exceed what the supply is rated to deliver; and network notification where the distributor requires it. Errors in any of these typically do not fail on day one — they fail years later, under load, on a hot night.

Yes, and it is sometimes cheaper than a bundled supply-and-install package. Two things to confirm before you buy. First, check with your chosen electrician that they are willing to install that specific model — some installers only warrant work on brands they supply, and some models have commissioning requirements that need particular software or accreditation. Second, check the manufacturer's warranty terms, because a few require purchase through an authorised channel or installation by an accredited installer for the full warranty to apply. Also confirm the unit is suitable for Australian conditions and supply: it should be designed for our voltage and plug standards, carry an appropriate IP rating if it is going outside, and ideally support OCPP if you want flexibility to change energy management platforms later. Buying a grey-import charger that has never been sold into the Australian market is where this approach usually goes wrong.

Every Australian state and territory maintains a free, public register of licensed electrical workers, searchable by name or licence number, and a check takes about a minute. Ask for the licence number before the work starts rather than after, and verify it yourself rather than accepting a photograph of a card. When the job is complete, make sure you receive the electrical safety certificate for your state — this is the document proving the work was performed lawfully, and you will want it for insurance purposes and when you eventually sell the property. Keep it with your house papers alongside your solar and battery documentation. If an installer is reluctant to provide a licence number, vague about which certificate you will receive, or wants payment in full before any documentation is issued, treat that as the answer to a different question and get another quote.
