One is the most proven home battery in Australia. The other is a newer brand at roughly a third of the price with no local review history. This is not a close contest on reputation — and that is exactly why the comparison is worth doing properly.

If you want the safest possible choice and can afford it, the Powerwall 3 is still the benchmark. If you want the most usable storage per dollar and can accept an unproven brand, GreenVolt is the more capacity you will get for the money. Both are LFP with 10-year manufacturer warranties.

Neither is better at everything. Here is the honest split.
Track record and support
Tesla has tens of thousands of Australian installs, a mature service network and years of field data. Green ESS has an Australian entity registered in 2023 and no independent local reviews as at August 2026. If something goes wrong in year six, one of these has a well-worn path and the other does not.
Usable capacity per dollar
A ten-module GreenVolt gives 27.5 kWh usable — more than double a single Powerwall 3 — at a fraction of the price. If your constraint is how much energy you can store for a given budget, this is not close.
Backup power
The Powerwall 3 delivers 11.5kW continuous, enough to run a whole home including heavy loads. GreenVolt is offered with 5kW and 8kW inverters, so backup is capped regardless of how much storage you add. If whole-home backup during outages is the priority, that gap matters.
Something genuinely different
The portable G4 modules run a mower, scooter and e-bike off the same battery platform. No other home battery sold in Australia does this. Whether that is worth anything depends entirely on whether you would use it.

It is a real risk and worth naming. A 10-year warranty is only as good as the company honouring it, and Green ESS Pty Ltd was registered in Australia in May 2023. If that risk outweighs the price advantage for you, buying an established brand is a perfectly rational decision.
So which battery is right for you?
There is no single winner. Here is how the two tend to sort out once you know what you actually want the battery to do.
Both are lithium-iron-phosphate systems with 10-year manufacturer warranties, and either can be a sound choice when sized and installed properly. The difference is what you are optimising for.
- Want the safest choice and whole-home backup? Tesla Powerwall 3. The built-in solar inverter, 11.5kW continuous output and proven service network are worth the premium if outage performance and peace of mind are the priority.
- Want maximum usable storage for the money? GreenVolt. Because the federal rebate stays at 60% up to 28 kWh usable, the ten-module configuration lands close to the most rebate-efficient size available — and you get roughly double the storage of a single Powerwall.
- All-electric home with an EV and high overnight load? Capacity usually beats power here, which favours GreenVolt — but check that a 5kW or 8kW inverter covers your evening peak before committing.
- Uncomfortable with an unproven brand? That is a legitimate position and we will not talk you out of it. Buy the Powerwall, or wait twelve months and see how the first GreenVolt installs age.

Two things that catch
people out.
Usable, not nominal
GreenVolt modules are 2.87 kWh nominal but 2.75 kWh usable on the CEC register. The federal rebate pays on usable. Make sure any quote you compare uses the same basis.
Inverter caps backup
Adding modules increases how long you can run, not how much you can run at once. A 28 kWh battery on a 5kW inverter still only delivers 5kW of backup.
The rebate has a cliff
Above 28 kWh usable the federal rebate drops to 15%. Both systems are affected. We explain the tiers here.
