Schools are a near-perfect solar match. Until the holidays.

A school uses power on weekdays, during daylight, when the sun is up — which is about as good as a commercial load profile gets. The complication is the calendar: term holidays remove a large share of the year, and they fall partly across the highest-generating months. Any proposal that models a school on annual averages has skipped the one thing that makes schools different. In Victoria there is also new money for exactly these buildings.

Why schools are
such good solar sites.

The load lands exactly where the generation is.

Then a quarter
of the year disappears.

The thing that makes schools different, and the thing most proposals omit.

The question to put to any school proposal. "What does this model assume happens during term breaks?" If the answer is an annual average, ask for it again split into term time and holidays. The self-consumption percentage will drop, the payback will lengthen, and the resulting number will be one you can actually rely on when you present it to a board or a council.

Solar Victoria states the Victorian Energy Upgrades program now offers upfront incentives for commercial and industrial premises installing solar PV between 30 and 200 kilowatts.

Systems must be installed through VEU accredited providers. This cannot be satisfied afterwards, so it has to be confirmed before the contract.

So what should
a school actually do?

Generally yes, because the load profile is close to ideal — weekday daytime consumption from lighting, computers, heating, cooling and canteens lines up with generation, so a high proportion of output is consumed on site at retail rates rather than exported at feed-in rates. The main complication is term holidays.

Load falls to base building services while the array keeps generating, including through the long summer break that coincides with the highest-generating period of the year. That output is exported rather than wasted, but at a fraction of the value it would have had in term time. It is why a school system should generally be sized to term-time consumption rather than to an annual average.

No. The incentive is created by the accredited provider as part of the installation, so if the installer is not accredited there is nothing to pass through and no separate later claim. Confirm accreditation in writing at quote stage.

Size it to term-time consumption and check the certificate thresholds for the result. A system stays inside the federal small-scale scheme only at 100 kW or less and under 250 MWh of annual output, and a large well-oriented school roof is exactly the case that can pass the capacity test and exceed the output test.

Many do, particularly where there is significant heating and cooling plant. It is worth checking, because demand charges are set by a short peak rather than by total consumption, and on an annual-ratchet tariff a peak set on one hot afternoon can bill every day for the following twelve months.
