Panels are warranted 25 years. The inverter on your wall is a 10-to-15-year part, hybrids often less, against a warranty that might only run five. Somewhere in the middle of your system's life there's a gap where the panels are fine, the warranty has expired, and a failure lands entirely on you. That doesn't break the economics of solar — but it does deserve budgeting for. Here's when to expect it, how to see it coming, and the one decision that stops you paying twice.

How long does a solar inverter
actually last?
Shorter than the panels — and that gap is the thing nobody explains at the point of sale.
Your panels are warranted for 25 years and will probably outlive that. Your inverter will not. It is the one component in a solar system with power electronics working hard every single day, and it is the part that fails first — usually well before the panels are halfway through their life.
Typical service life, as a planning assumption rather than a promise:
- String inverters (the box on your wall) — roughly 10 to 15 years.
- Hybrid inverters (battery-capable) — roughly 10 to 12 years. Shorter, because they're doing more work: managing battery charge and discharge as well as solar conversion.
- Microinverters (one per panel, on the roof) — roughly 20 to 25 years, often warranted to match the panels.
Warranties typically run 5 to 12 years depending on brand and whether you paid to extend. So there is frequently a gap in the middle of your system's life where the panels are fine, the inverter is out of warranty, and a failure lands entirely on you.
That's not a reason to avoid solar — the economics still work comfortably with a mid-life inverter replacement priced in. It is a reason to know it's coming, budget for it, and not be blindsided at year eleven.
How do you know
it's on the way out?
Six signals, roughly in order of how urgently they need attention.

- Generation has dropped and stayed down. Compare a clear sunny day now against a clear sunny day a few years ago in your monitoring. A gradual, consistent shortfall that isn't explained by shading, dirt or weather points at the inverter.
- It's dropping offline or restarting repeatedly. Especially in heat. Frequent shutdowns on hot afternoons often mean the cooling is failing — a fan, a blocked vent, or capacitors past their best.
- It's getting noisy. A rising whine or a rattling cooling fan is a wearing part telling you so. A fan replacement is a comparatively cheap repair if you catch it before the heat kills something else.
- Error codes are becoming routine. One isolation fault after heavy rain is weather. The same code every week is a pattern.
- You can't get parts or support. This is the quiet one. If the manufacturer has left the Australian market or the model is long discontinued, an otherwise-repairable fault becomes a replacement by default.
Heat is the underlying villain in most inverter failures. Electrolytic capacitors degrade faster the hotter they run, and an inverter mounted in full afternoon western sun, or boxed into an unventilated garage corner, will age measurably faster than the identical unit installed in shade with airflow. Treat those as indicative rather than a quote — pricing moves with brand, size, site access and whether any switchboard work is needed — and get two quotes.
One thing worth knowing before you accept “out of warranty, nothing we can do”: Australian Consumer Law guarantees run alongside the manufacturer's warranty and are not limited by it. Goods must be of acceptable quality and last a reasonable time given their price and purpose. For a major, expensive, permanently installed product like a solar inverter, a reasonable period is frequently argued to be around a decade — so a premium inverter that dies at year six may well have a claim even though the written warranty has expired. Raise it with the retailer, in writing, and take it to your state consumer affairs body if they brush you off.
The mistake worth avoiding:
replacing it twice.
If you're replacing an inverter anyway, this is the moment to decide about batteries.
An inverter replacement is a genuine fork in the road, and it's worth ten minutes of thought rather than simply buying the same thing again.
If a battery is anywhere in your plans — this year or in three years — then replacing a dead string inverter with a hybrid inverter now is usually far cheaper than replacing it with a like-for-like string inverter and then paying again for battery capability later. You're already paying for the labour, the switchboard work and the network paperwork; doing it once instead of twice is the saving.

Two other things to settle at the same time, because they're cheap now and expensive later:
- Size it for the array you'll have, not just the one you have. If you're likely to add panels, a slightly larger inverter now avoids repeating the job.
- Check what changes when you touch the system. Replacing an inverter usually means a new network connection approval, and in some cases moving to current export rules — which can affect a legacy feed-in tariff. So — what should you
actually do?
Ordered by where you are right now.
If your system is healthy, do nothing except know the number. Assume the inverter is a 10–15 year consumable and set the expectation now; it makes the eventual bill an annoyance rather than a crisis. If it's mounted in full western sun, consider shading it — that's the cheapest life extension available.
