Tesla Powerwall 2 vs Powerwall 3.
In 2026 this is not really a purchase decision. Powerwall 3 superseded Powerwall 2 in Australia, and a subset of Powerwall 2 units is under an active safety recall. So the useful version of this question is: what do you do if you already own one, and what should you say if someone offers you one?

A subset of Powerwall 2 units is under active recall.
Recall PRA 2025/20611, published 16 September 2025 and updated on 13 April and 12 August 2026, covers a subset of Powerwall 2 units available for sale in Australia between 1 November 2020 and 23 August 2025. Certain third-party battery cells may fail and overheat. Some units have experienced smoking or flames, with minor property damage reported.
Powerwall 3 is not included in this recall.
If you own a Powerwall 2, do this today.
Keep the system online and connected to the internet, and check the Tesla app — it tells owners directly whether their unit is affected. Tesla remotely discharges affected units as a precaution and then replaces them free of charge. Compensation for lost savings is considered case by case.
As of the 12 August 2026 update, you no longer have to wait to be contacted. Affected owners can contact their installer and schedule the replacement themselves. If you have been sitting on this since April, that is the change worth acting on.

Same storage. Very different power.
The headline number people compare is capacity, and on capacity these two are identical. The difference that actually changes what the battery does in your house is power.

5 kW versus 11.5 kW is the whole story.
Powerwall 3 delivers more than double the continuous power of a Powerwall 2 from the same 13.5 kWh of storage. Capacity decides how long you last. Power decides what you can run at once.
On a Powerwall 2, 5 kW is roughly a ducted air conditioner and not much else. Add an oven, an induction cooktop or a pool pump on top and you are over the limit, at which point the battery cannot carry the house on its own. On a Powerwall 3, 11.5 kW comfortably runs a normal Australian evening — aircon, cooking and everything incidental — without you thinking about it.
If your interest in a battery is mostly shifting cheap solar into the evening, 5 kW was always adequate and the difference barely shows up. If your interest is riding out a blackout without rationing what you switch on, it is the single most important line in the table.
The inverter difference changes what your install looks like.
Powerwall 2 is AC-coupled: it has no solar inverter, so it sits alongside whatever inverter your panels already use. That made it excellent for retrofits — bolt it onto an existing system and nothing else changes.
Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built in. On a new installation that removes a separate box, a separate failure point and some cost. On a retrofit where your existing inverter is healthy, it means you are buying an inverter you may not need — which is worth pricing carefully rather than assuming the newer product is automatically the cheaper path.
Put a real Australian evening against the limit.
Abstract kilowatts are hard to judge, so here is a normal weeknight in a normal house. These are typical running draws — yours will vary with the appliance, and motors briefly pull more on start-up than they do running.

The limit arrives at dinner, not at midnight.
Notice where the line falls. A Powerwall 2 handles the house comfortably until you start cooking — and then, on the one evening you actually need it, aircon plus an oven already exceeds what it can supply on its own. A Powerwall 3 absorbs the whole scenario with headroom left.
This is not a fault in the Powerwall 2. It is a five-kilowatt battery doing exactly what a five-kilowatt battery does, and when it was released nothing else in its class did better. It only becomes a limitation when you assume the two products behave the same because the capacity matches.
Grid-connected and running normally, the ceiling barely matters — the grid quietly supplies whatever the battery cannot, and you never notice. The number only bites during an outage, when the battery is the only thing there. That is why the honest question is not "which battery is better" but "what do you expect to run when the power is out?" If the answer is the fridge, some lights and the wifi, a Powerwall 2 is entirely adequate and always was.
What changes as a product ages out.
Superseded hardware does not stop working the day the replacement launches. What changes is everything around it, and those changes arrive slowly enough that people rarely price them in.
Parts and service.
While a product is current, spares are plentiful and any certified installer has seen one. As stock winds down, non-warranty repairs get slower and the pool of technicians who work on them daily shrinks. This is a normal product lifecycle, not a Tesla-specific problem — but it is a real consideration when you are weighing a discounted older unit against a current one.
Rebate eligibility is a moving target.
Federal and state programs, including the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, require the battery to be on the Clean Energy Council's approved list at the time of installation. That list is not static: in January 2026 the CEC brought expiry dates forward for more than 700 products as part of the transition to the new SA TS 5398 technical specification, and in late 2025 it updated usable and nominal capacities on a range of listings.
The practical implication is that "it was approved when I looked it up last year" is not a safe assumption for any battery, from any manufacturer. Check the current list before you sign, and make sure the model number on your quote matches the model number on the listing — capacity changes have been issued against specific model numbers, and a new listing is required to change a usable-capacity figure.
Why the model number matters more than the name.
Rebates are calculated on the usable capacity recorded against a specific model number on that list, not on the product name in a brochure. If a quote says "Powerwall" without a model number, ask for one. It is the same principle we apply to usable versus nominal capacity: the number that pays your rebate is the one on the register, not the one in the marketing.
You can now expand a Powerwall 2 system with Powerwall 3.
For most of Powerwall 3's life in Australia the two generations could not be mixed, which left existing owners with no upgrade path short of replacing what they had. Tesla has since announced compatibility between the generations for the Australian and New Zealand market, allowing an existing Powerwall 2 system to be expanded with Powerwall 3 units.
If you own a Powerwall 2 and want more storage or more power, that is the development to ask your installer about — and it is recent enough that not every retailer will have caught up with it. Confirm the current position with Tesla or a Tesla-certified installer before you commit to anything, because compatibility announcements move faster than product pages do.
Sequence matters if your unit is under recall.
If your Powerwall 2 falls inside the recall dates, sort the recall before you plan an expansion. The remedy is a free replacement unit, and it makes no sense to design a larger system around a battery that Tesla is about to swap out. Deal with the safety item first, then talk about capacity.
Questions to ask before buying a Powerwall 2 in 2026.
Powerwall 2 is no longer the current product in Australia, so a new one on offer is old stock and a used one carries someone else's history. Neither is automatically a bad deal. Both need questions that a discount does not answer.
- When was it available for sale? Units sold between 1 November 2020 and 23 August 2025 fall inside the recall window. Ask for the serial number and have it checked before any money moves.
- Has the recall remedy already been done? If the unit was replaced under PRA 2025/20611, that is a point in its favour — you are getting newer hardware. Ask for evidence rather than assurance.
- How much warranty is actually left? Ten years from the original installation date, not from your purchase. A 2021 unit has roughly five years remaining.
- Is it on the Clean Energy Council approved batteries list today? Federal and state rebate programs, including the SRES, require the battery to be on that list at the time of installation. Listings and expiry dates change — in January 2026 the CEC brought expiry dates forward for more than 700 products — so check the current CEC approved batteries list yourself rather than taking a seller's word for it. If it is not listed, no rebate applies and your network may not approve the connection.
- Who honours the warranty? A second-hand battery sold privately usually comes with no installer behind it, and a manufacturer warranty can depend on professional installation and registration.
The honest summary: at a genuinely large discount, on a unit outside the recall window with real warranty left and current CEC listing, a Powerwall 2 can still make sense. At a small discount it almost never does, because you are accepting half the power and an older product to save a little.
Six things to check on a Powerwall proposal.
Powerwall quotes are usually simpler than modular-battery quotes, because there is one product and one capacity. That simplicity hides a few places things still go wrong.
- Which generation, in writing. "Powerwall" is not a model. The quote should say Powerwall 3. If it says Powerwall 2, ask why, and see the recall section above before going further.
- How many units. Capacity scales by adding Powerwalls, so 27 kWh means two units and two wall positions. Confirm where the second one goes before install day.
- What is on the backup circuit. Backup is a wiring decision made at the switchboard, not a property of the battery. Ask which circuits sit on the backup side of the changeover. A battery that can deliver 11.5 kW is no help if the oven was never wired into backup.
- Whether your existing solar is being kept or replaced. Powerwall 3 includes a solar inverter. On a retrofit with a healthy existing inverter, that is capability you may be paying for twice — worth pricing an AC-coupled alternative alongside it.
- The Gateway. Backup requires a Tesla Backup Gateway, and it is a separate piece of hardware with its own install requirements. Confirm it is in the quote rather than assumed.
- The CEC listing for the exact model. Rebates are calculated on usable capacity recorded against a specific model on the approved list at the time of installation, and listings change.
What the 13.5 kWh actually covers.
Capacity questions are easier to answer than power questions because they are just arithmetic. A typical Australian home uses somewhere around 15 to 20 kWh a day, with maybe 8 to 12 kWh of that after dark. So 13.5 kWh usable covers a normal evening and overnight comfortably, with margin.
Where it runs short is the multi-day outage or the winter week with little sun. A battery is not a generator: it stores what your panels made today. If you are buying for resilience rather than bill-shifting, the honest questions are how often your area actually loses power, for how long, and whether a second unit or a generator is the better answer to that specific risk.

Powerwall 3 is a genuinely strong product and the best-known battery in Australia. Here is where we would still suggest something different.
You are retrofitting and your solar inverter is healthy.
Powerwall 3's built-in solar inverter is an advantage on a new system and a duplicated cost on a retrofit. If you have a working inverter with years left, an AC-coupled battery leaves it alone — the Enphase IQ Battery and AlphaESS SMILE M are both built for that case.
You want more than about 27 kWh.
Powerwall scales by adding whole units, which is tidy but reaches a practical wall-space limit quickly. Modular systems stack vertically in one footprint — Pylontech Force H3 reaches 35.84 kWh in a single string, BYD HVM reaches 22.08 kWh per tower and 66.2 kWh across three, and SigenStor reaches 46.8 kWh usable in one stack.
You are on three-phase and want backup on every phase.
This needs deliberate design regardless of brand. Three-phase hybrids that deliver across the phases from one unit — AlphaESS G3-T, Sigen Hybrid TP2, Sungrow's SHT series with SBH — are worth pricing against a Powerwall configuration.
You want the longest warranty on the hardware.
Powerwall carries ten years, which is the Australian standard. Enphase offers fifteen. If warranty length is what you are optimising for, that is the comparison to make — bearing in mind that a warranty is only worth the company standing behind it in year fourteen.
You own a working Powerwall 2.
Keep it. Check the app for recall status and have the remedy performed if it applies. Nothing about Powerwall 3 makes a healthy Powerwall 2 unsafe or obsolete, and replacing one that is not affected by the recall is a sales outcome rather than a safety one.
You might not need a battery yet.
If your evening usage is modest, or your roof has room for more panels, solar frequently returns more per dollar than storage. We publish how often our advice is that you do not need to spend anything, because a recommendation that can never be "no" is a sales pitch.

Retrofitting to healthy existing solar: price both paths properly. Powerwall 3's built-in inverter is an advantage on a new system and a duplicated cost on a retrofit where your inverter is fine.
