Jouli Privacy Policy.
How Jouli — Mission Green's free AI energy advisor — handles your information under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.
This is a plain-English summary of how we handle your information — written to be readable, not as legal advice. The short version: we collect as little as we can, we never sell your personal data, and anything you upload (like a bill or quote photo) is used to give you the advice you asked for. We also keep anonymous, de-identified figures — stripped of anything that points to you — to make Jouli's advice sharper for everyone. The detail below explains the rest.
Jouli gives honest general guidance and can make mistakes — confirm figures before you act. It is not a licensed financial or energy adviser, and it is not an electricity retailer.
Jouli is a free AI energy advisor for Australian homes, built and run by Mission Green Pty Ltd, an Australian CEC/SAA-accredited solar, battery and electrification installer. This policy explains what we collect when you use Jouli, why, who helps us process it, and the rights you have under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
1What we collect
We try to collect only what we need to answer your questions and keep the service running.
- Your chat messages. The questions and replies you type to Jouli, so we can answer them. Please don't share more personal detail than you need to — Jouli works fine without your full name, address or account numbers.
- Bill and quote photos you choose to upload. If you send a photo of an energy bill or a quote, we process it to read the relevant figures and give you advice on it. That's the only thing we use it for.
- An email address and your state — only if you choose to give them. If you create an account or sign up for the opt-in "Jouli Watch" digest, we store your email and (optionally) your state or territory so the updates are relevant to where you live. Accounts and Jouli Watch are entirely optional — you can use Jouli without either.
- Basic technical and usage information. Things like your IP address and simple request data, used to apply rate limits and prevent abuse so the free service stays available to everyone.
What we don't collect: we don't take any payment or card details, because Jouli is free. We don't ask for or store financial account logins. And we don't build advertising profiles about you.
2How we use it
- To answer your questions and give you energy guidance, including reading any bill or quote photo you upload.
- To improve the quality and accuracy of Jouli's guidance over time.
- To send you the Jouli Watch digest — but only if you opted in, and only until you unsubscribe.
- To protect the service: detecting abuse, applying rate limits, and keeping things secure and reliable.
Jouli gives honest general guidance and can make mistakes. It is not a licensed financial or energy adviser, and it is not an electricity retailer. We mention this here because it shapes what your information is — and isn't — used for.
3Who processes your data
We use a small number of trusted service providers to run Jouli. They process data on our behalf, under our instructions, and only for the purposes above:
- Cloudflare — runs the service layer that carries your chat requests, and helps with security and rate-limiting.
- Anthropic — provides the Claude AI model that generates Jouli's replies. Your messages (and any uploaded photo) are sent to Anthropic to produce an answer.
- Supabase — stores optional account sign-in details and the Jouli Watch subscriber list (your email and state), if you provide them.
- Resend — sends the Jouli Watch emails to subscribers.
Some of these providers may store or process data on servers outside Australia. We choose providers that we consider take privacy and security seriously, and we only share what each one needs to do its job.
4We never sell your personal data
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information to anyone, and we don't share it for third-party advertising. The only reason Mission Green earns anything is if you later choose to have us install solar, a battery or electrification work — Jouli itself is free, and your personal information isn't the product.
5Anonymous, aggregated insights
Australia has surprisingly little honest public data on what households actually pay for power, or what solar and batteries really cost once installed. So when you share a figure with Jouli to run a calculation — a tariff rate, a quarterly bill, a quote price, a system size — we may keep that number on its own, immediately stripped of anything that could identify you: no name, email, phone, address, account, or original bill or photo, and tagged at most with your state. In the same de-identified way, we may also note which kind of question you asked — a topic and a state (for example, "someone in VIC asked about batteries"), never the words you typed.
We use these anonymous figures two ways: to replace Jouli's rough benchmarks with what people in your state genuinely pay, so the advice gets sharper for everyone; and, in aggregate only, to report energy-market insights such as a typical installed solar price by region. Because the figures are de-identified the moment we keep them, and only ever reported in aggregate, they are not your personal information and they can't be traced back to you — so sharing or publishing them is not selling your data. You're always in control of which numbers you type, and if you have any concern you can contact us at the address below.
6Consent, and how to opt out
By using Jouli's chat, you're consenting to your messages (and any photo you upload) being processed to answer you, as described above. The Jouli Watch digest is separate and opt-in — we only email you if you signed up.
You can withdraw consent at any time:
- Unsubscribe from Jouli Watch using the link at the bottom of any digest email, or by emailing us at the address below. We'll stop sending and remove you from the list.
- Close your account by contacting us, and we'll delete the account details we hold.
- Stop chatting at any time — you're never obliged to provide personal details to Jouli.
7How long we keep it
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected, then delete or de-identify it.
- Jouli Watch and account details are kept while your subscription or account is active, and removed when you unsubscribe or ask us to close it.
- Uploaded bill and quote photos are used to generate your advice and are not retained as part of any long-term profile about you.
- Technical and abuse-prevention data (such as IP-based rate-limiting records) is kept only as long as needed for security.
8How we keep it secure
We use providers and practices designed to protect your information — including encrypted connections and access controls — and we limit who and what can reach your data. No online service can promise perfect security, but we take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, loss, and unauthorised access, in line with APP 11.
9Your rights under the Australian Privacy Principles
Jouli handles your information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the 13 Australian Privacy Principles, which govern how Australian organisations collect, use, store, disclose and secure personal information. Among other things, the APPs give you the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct it if it's wrong or out of date.
- Be told how your information is handled — which is the purpose of this policy.
- Complain if you think we've mishandled your information.
To access or correct your information, just email us at the address below and we'll help. If we can't action a request, we'll explain why.
10Making a complaint
If you have a privacy concern, please contact us first — we'd like the chance to put it right. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), which oversees privacy in Australia, at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.
11Children
Jouli is intended for adults making decisions about their home energy, and is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we'll delete it.
12Changes to this policy
If our data practices change, we'll update this page and move the "last updated" date at the top. For significant changes affecting subscribers, we may also note it in a Jouli Watch email.
